Did You SAE Something?

NaBloPoMo Day 1
70% of the current cases of diabetes occur in low- and middle income countries. With an estimated 50.8 million people living with diabetes, India has the world's largest diabetes population, followed by China with 43.2 million.

Welcome November 2010!  It's officially Diabetes Awareness Month!  Sarah had a great idea to make November 1st SAE DAY!  A day to intentionally SUPPORT, ADVOCATE, and EDUCATE the world about diabetes....or at least a day to come up with a plan, act on ideas, or step things up a notch!

Here is part of my SAE plan for November:

  • I'm going to participate in NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) again....and, every day, I will post a new diabetes factoid at the top of my post (Let's face it, on some days, that factoid could actually *BE* my post!!!).  There are LOTS of DOC bloggers who will also be participating in NaBloPoMo.  If you check out my sidebar, you'll find a blogroll I created dedicated to keeping these posts updated. If YOU are a member of the DOC and plan to participate in NaBloPoMo for November 2010, PLEASE leave me a comment so I can add your blog to my blogroll.  THANKS!!!!!  I'm also going to comment on as many blog posts that I can to remind my fellow bloggers that SOMEONE out there is listening to them :)
  • I'm going to post about this weekend's fantastic JDRF Walk To Cure Diabetes and make sure I send thank you notes to everyone who supported Team Candy Hearts.
  • I'm going to advocate for a YES vote in Tuesday's election for the school budget override, and a YES vote for Prop 302 to stop wasteful government spending in the state of Arizona.  Both of these issues affect children with diabetes in the school system.  If the override is not passed, we risk losing our school nurses and, if Prop 302 does not pass, extra money that could be used to benefit our school systems will continue to sit in a bank account not being used to help ANYONE except the people on it's payroll who haven't done anything to help anyone since 2006.

***REMEMBER YES FOR THE OVERRIDE and YES ON PROP 302!!!!***

Nicole over at The We CARA Lot Blog created an awesome Tshirt design for World Diabetes Day (11/14).

November 9, 2010 is DBLOG DAY!

Google
There is a petition asking GOOGLE to take a stand and spread diabetes awareness on November 14th.  We are asking Google for a World Diabetes Day Doodle.
HERE is the link if you would like to sign the petition.
Last year we were denied.  Will 2010 be different?

See you tomorrow!

  5. My biggest worry with Prop 302 is that the state legislature SAYS they will use the money for schools, but education is always the first place they look to cut. I'm not holding my breath for any money to go to education or health funding...the voters of Arizona passed 302 in 2006 (with the proviso that money would begin being distributed in 2009) and it bugs me that the legislature AGAIN wants to overturn the will of the people. Of course, we are in a horrible budget crisis, so they are looking for money from anywhere they can get it. But, that's just my .02....

  6. Yes, except First Things First is sitting pretty on a bank account filled with THREE HUNDRED TWENTY FOUR MILLION DOLLARS that is "supposed" to be used to support early education programs...

Yet, despite a 15% paycut and mandatory furlough days (Jay works in public safety) along with increased health care premiums, our family has been denied assistance for the THREE years we've accessed the program. This year we have TWO kids enrolled and they STILL denied us. We missed the "income qualification" by $3,000 this year. And that's BEFORE all of the paycuts and furlough days went into effect in July. Not to mention that the tuition has nearly DOUBLED since last year!

I had to FIGHT for my child's right to a 504 in 2007. Now I'm FIGHTING because a second child has a speech concern and my requests for assistance obtaining an evaluation have fallen on deaf ears for over a year.

Who from First Things First has had a paycut or a furlough day? Had that money been in the general fund, perhaps it could have lessened the burden our family has faced.

Furthermore, MY tax dollars are sending half the kids in our preschool class to school for FREE, while I'm paying DOUBLE the tuition for TWO of them WITHOUT A DIME of assistance. WHY? Why can't they pay a tuition too?

So, we've been raped because he's state employee and that money wasn't available to save his salary. We're being raped by the system because our taxes send other kids to school for FREE, and we're being raped with the burden of DOUBLE the tuition....all while THREE HUNDRED TWENTY FOUR MILLION DOLLARS sit in a bank account helping NO ONE, except the First Things First people who haven't suffered a single loss throughout this entire economic downfall.

I want every last dime of that mismanaged money put back into the general fund.

    Maybe then it'll help SOMEONE.
