It's About Time For A Sighting....

For today's installment of NaBloPoMo (DAY 9, by the way), I'd like to offer you a blast from my past.  This isn't just any repost, my friends.  You see....I just realized that TODAY is September 9th.  I've been gearing up for this year's sighting, but haven't found it yet....stay tuned, though, because you never know what's lurking around tomorrow's corner...

SEPTEMBER 5, 2008

This is Frank. I found him at the bottom of my laundry basket a couple weeks ago. Yes, my dear loved ones who are far, far away...he is a scorpion. And that's the bottom of my white laundry basket he's crawling on -- inside my house. We are cohabiting with scorpions, I guess.

I managed to shuffle Frank into a jar...Sugar and Tiara became quite attached to him and wanted him to watch them play Memory, do front rolls, and practice karate. Tink watched every move he made. Eventually, Frank ended up on a shelf in the garage -- where Jason decided to feed him a couple crickets. He promptly ate them. We found another (smaller) scorpion friend on the bath mat 2 days later while Jason was getting out of the shower...so he became Frank's roomate, Fred. Ultimately, Frank ate him too...and then he died.

Goodbye, Frank.

Desert living -- what can I say? Our family encountered a pack of wild javelinas (um, kind of like wild BOARS) at the neighborhood park shortly after we moved in. A child was bitten by a rattlesnake while playing on the path behind the elementary school a few months back. Coyotes are known to roam our neighborhood streets at night. We often hear them yapping at 2 am-ish. Aside from scorpions, there are a variety of other creepy, crawly things that linger in our surroundings...some of which, I can't identify and swear insects that large should be considered a higher level of animal being.

Not to worry, the bug guy has stopped by a couple times to give us some extra "spray".

Feel free to come visit anytime :)

SEPTEMBER 4, 2009

Hello. I’m Fran. Have we met? You might remember my cousins Frank and Fred. In fact, it was just about a year ago to the day that they debuted here on Candy Hearts.

Anyway, I’ve been working on my figure. I just knew my 15 minutes of fame would come knocking soon!

I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to introduce myself. Try not to hate me because I’m beautiful, okay?

Today it’s my turn for the spotlight.

It’s certainly nice to meet you…

(Not to worry, it's dead...the Bug Guy found Fran hiding in the corner behind the wooden cross next to our front door. Here in the desert, you need to have your house treated about every 3 months in an attempt to keep the creepy crawly things away. The white residue on it's back is from said Bug Guy...who, incidentally, screamed when he found it.)

  4. LOL very common in Texas, but the only time you find multiples inside your home, is if you have a nest of them...Enjoy the critters and try not to get stung.

  5. OK...I am creeping out up here in VT. But, I used to live in New Mexico where the lawns would "come to life" at night with Cockroaches - EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. It was nasty. And the "bug guy" would have to treat our house every few months too.

I don't miss any of that part of the SouthWest. I think it is funny that the "bug guy" screamed.

  6. I'm shuddering over here! Icky! I have a hard enough time with the big spidery-legged centipedes that we get! I don't think I could handle scorpions!

  7. I remember that last pic all too well. It made me throw up a little in my mouth then...and it made me again now.

I couldn't handle finding a scorpion in my house. I'm just not strong enough.
